New restaurants pop up all the time. How many can say they’ve got their own speakeasy, though? Just one. There’s a new place in Manhattan, not even two miles from Seastreak’s docks at Pier 11, where you can get both high quality foods and cocktails served in a classic ambiance. Head up to 313 Church Street, and you’ll find the Church Street Tavern. Or slip downstairs to the Bandit’s Roost Speakeasy for a drink in a unique lounge.
Ambiance of a Bygone Era
Church Street Tavern serves up American-inspired food created by Chef Chris Burke, who’s worked alongside such notables as Daniel Boulud, Gordon Ramsey, and David Bouley. He presents a menu of what some might call comfort food, but others might call high class cuisine. Sure, you’ll find a hamburger on the menu, but it’s made of a dry-aged blend of meat and topped with Vermont cheddar cheese and bacon onion relish. That’s not your everyday burger.
You’ll also find some mouthwatering seafood for your eager consumption. Church Street Tavern has a raw bar with fresh sea treats, like Russian black caviar and vodka, oysters, and clams. For people who’d prefer their seafood after a close encounter with a stove, try the pan roasted halibut with braised greens.
What’s the Password?
After 10 PM, you can head downstairs to a speakeasy modeled on the aesthetic of the mobster-era taverns. The Bandit’s Roost Speakeasy is named after a famous photograph by Jacob Riis, but this place is no back alley. It’s an exclusive hidden lounge with gorgeous décor from the time, where it’s not hard to imagine how it felt to sip a drink in the hidden watering holes of the Prohibition Era.
Seastreak ferries may not have speakeasies under them (because it’s not easy to speak underwater), but we’re still a classic New York establishment! Hop on one of our luxurious ferries, and sail away in style.
Sea you soon!
